Chapter 12

Dalton

I must be stuck in a nightmare. I feel like I’m living the end of the Dirty Dancing movie. This Patrick Swayze wanna be might as well have puffed out his chest, saying, “no one puts baby in a corner.” He swooped in, swept her away, and is currently twirling her around the dance floor like the waltz was named after him. I had taken a step to stop them, when Jasper stuck out his arm. Bethany had that look in her eye. The one that makes it impossible not to hold her, comfort her, until she feels better.

“You can glare at me all day, brother, but eventually you’ll need to go find your date.” Jasper states. I don’t bother replying. Anything I say at this point could come back to bite me. Unlike most adults, that lesson from childhood stuck with me. Turning on my heel, I start mumbling insults to myself. A feeling of guilt, in my chest, growing with each step I take. April must have seen the way I was looking at Bethany, and had it not been for Jasper I would have made an even bigger mistake. Bethany is not mine to take care of anymore.

It takes some time, but I eventually find her. April is sitting at a table, with one of the fighters I recognize from Roy’s gym. You know that feeling of guilt I was talking about earlier. Let’s just say it’s slowly being replaced with jealousy, something I don’t experience often. I can see him leisurely trailing his eyes across her bare skin. The short dress she’s wearing had me doing a second look when she first stepped out of her house. Now another man is looking at her. Hope and desire clouding his gaze. The thought of his slimy-paws on her forces me to speed up my pace.

“April, I need to speak to you, privately.” I smoothly state, now standing between them. He can no longer see her. The knowledge eases the green monster inside; no longer threatening to come out and play.

“Do you?” She responds with a look of indifference. The months we’ve spent together I’ve started to realize how much I like her reactions. I’ve seen her mad, happy, playful, and downright angry before, this is a new one. I run my hands through my hair, the lack of control I have right now is starting to get under my skin, and frustration is setting in.

“Leave.” I command, turning my attention to the man sitting beside her.

“Don’t be rude, Dalton.” April remarks, reaching around me to place her hand on his arm. Her blue eyes daring me to show everyone in the room what that simple touch does. The little vixen knows exactly what she’s doing.

I suppress my urge to throw her over my shoulder, slapping her on the ass nice and hard, for everyone to see. Maybe that’s what April wants. To be marked. Letting everyone know that she belongs to someone, to me. Taking a step back, I give her a clear warning with my eyes.
